Restaurant Guide for Littleton, Bethlehem, and Franconia
Compiled by Shep Melnick and Joanne Linden
Since we spent much of the summer in the area, we have eaten at many of the restaurants in Littleton, Bethlehem, and Franconia. Littleton is by far the largest of the towns, with a vibrant Main Street and a lovely river walk. It also claims to have the longest candy counter in the world. It recently made the Readers’ Digest list of top ten nicest places to live in the US. (Keep in mind that this is Shep’s hometown, so he is obviously biased.) Bethlehem is closest to Bretton Woods, about 15 minutes on Route 302. Littleton is another 10 minutes on 302. Franconia is about 25 minutes away on Route 3.
Bethlehem is pretty sleepy in the winter and spring, busier in the summer and fall. It used to be the home of many large hotels serving families escaping the heat and pollution of Boston and New York in the summer. Train after train would arrive each day. Now all the old hotels are gone. But the views of the mountains are still there. Franconia is another small town, this one more connected with skiing and hiking since it is next to Franconia Notch and Cannon Mountain (the best ski mountain in the East). The restaurants tend to be a bit fancier.

BETHLEHEM
Rosa Flamingos, 2312 Main St., 603-869-3111
One of our favorites. Fancy pizza and much else.
Rek-Lis Brewery, 2085 Main St., 603-991-2357
A new, lively brewpub, sometimes with live music.
Adair Country Inn and Restaurant, 80 Guider Lane, 603-444-2600
New, fancy, beautiful place. (We have never eaten there.)

LITTLETON
Schillings Beer Company, 18 Mill St., (603) 444-4800
Very good pizza and beer. If it is warm enough to sit outside, great views of the river. New brewery is next door.
Chang Thai Café, 77 Main St., (603) 444-8810
Probably our favorite place to eat in the area. Good food, run by nice people.
Freehouse Taproom and Eatery, 28 Cottage St., (603) 575-5410
New and yuppie.
Little Grill, 62 Cottage St., (603) 444-0395
Located in the old train station, good place if you like a lot of meat.
Alburritos, 106 Main St., (603) 444-3338
Tex-Mex food from south of the (Canadian) border.
Littleton Diner, 145 Main St., (603) 444-3994
A local institution. Better for breakfast and lunch than for dinner. A favorite of bikers from Quebec, who are much more pleasant than their American counterparts.
Timbir Alley, 7 Main St., (603) 444-6142
Small, with very good food. More expensive than others in Littleton.
FRANCONIA
Franconia Inn, 1172 Easton Road, (603) 823-5542
Terrific setting, with views of Cannon and Lafayette.
Tavern at Sugar Hill Inn, 231 Sunset Hill Road, Sugar Hill, (603) 823-7244
Go for the spectacular view more than the food. If you get a chance, return when the lupine are in bloom in June.
Lovetts Inn and Restaurant, 1474 Profile Rd., (603) 823-7761
Quaint, good views.
Dutch Treat, 317 Main St., (603) 823-8851
Best place to watch a Red Sox-Yankees game. Unless you root for the Evil Empire.
